Get to Know Your Food at Mahalin Pagkaing Atin

Mahalin Pagkaing Atin at Mercato Centrale

We’re so proud of our dishes and we longed that Filipino cuisine would soon be recognized globally. But do we really know our food? We know about adobo, and probably sinigang, but what about the others? Get to know your food at Mahalin Pagkaing Atin, an advocacy campaign spearheaded by Pilmico that talks about our favorite topic – food. Pilmico, an Aboitiz food subsidiary, donates piglets and egg machines to selected beneficiaries in different provinces as part of its Mahalin Pagkaing Atin (MPA) advocacy campaign. This is to encourage farmers to embrace backyard farming as a sustainable form of livelihood for locals. The program further promotes sustainable entrepreneurship, homegrown produce and instills a “pride of product, pride of place” mindset for both farmers and consumers. For me, this is actually a good project to discourage people from the provinces to migrate to Manila to find a job. “Pilmico has been true to its corporate ...

Building Blocks for Change Led by Surf, Smart and Cebuana Lhuillier

Building Blocks for Change

Plastics are non-biodegradable, we all know that. It will take many years to break down at the very least, some won’t break down at all. This is why we’re seeing many establishments in the country are providing paper bags, and would highly encourage shoppers to bring their own bags. In a step to help the environment, a program dubbed Building Blocks for Change led by Surf, Smart and Cebuana Lhuillier was launched recently. Unilever Philippines spearheaded its Sachet Recovery Program last year and through its detergent brand Surf and Fiesta ng Surfresa promo were able to collect millions of sachets which were converted into 30,000 cement pavers that will be donated to beneficiaries of 30 public schools throughout the country. The Ilaya Elementary School in Tanay, Rizal; Dualtech Center in Canlubang, Laguna; Candau-ay Elementary School in Dumaguete; and Balulang National High School in Cagayan de Oro are just a few ...

Say “I Love You Anak” and Show How Love Sees Beyond Differences

I Love You Anak eBooks

As read on the Bible, under the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 13 verse 7, “Love puts up with all things, trusts in all things, hopes for all things, endures all things.” Last Friday, through testimonies and storytelling, I was able to witness this kind of love at the Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street. It was the launch of the “I Love You Anak” eBook, the first ever Filipino written and illustrated eBook on adoption launched by the DSWD and ICAB as part of “Love Sees Beyond Differences” adoption advocacy campaign. The eBook consists of 7 heart-warming stories, colorfully illustrated to capture the attention of every kids. It is a great tool for adoptive parents in telling their adopted kids that they were, adopted. There’s a lot of stigma in relation to adoption, especially in the Philippines. We have heard stories one way or another, of an adopted child going ...

Philippine Billiards Legends Spotted at the Villards Cup 2012 Billiards Tournament

Villards Cup - Sen Manny Villar with the Filipino Billards Champs

Philippine Billiards legends Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, Francisco ‘Django’ Bustamante, Ronnie ‘The Volcano’ Alcano and Dennis ‘Robocop’ Orcollo were spotted at the Villards Cup 2012 Billiards Tournament which was held at the newly-opened Starmall in San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan on September 23 and 24. I was at the sporting event during the opening where I also saw Sen. Manny Villar who was flocked by the media and left me on the sidelines observing. Fortunately I was able to capture a snapshot. Sixteen amateur players from all over the province of Bulacan qualified for the Villards Cup competition. Started in 2008, the billiards tournament was established to provide a place for amateur players to compete against budding players. This is a very good avenue to promote the sport. Unlike basketball and most recently, football, I am not aware of any training or clinics established to hone the skills of amateur ...

Operation Smile Hopes to Bring More Smile via The Journey Home

Operation Smile 30th Anniv - The Journey Home

Operation Smile celebrates it’s 30th anniversary via “The Journey Home” — an event aimed to provide free reconstructive surgery to 4,500 Filipino children and young adults in different parts of the country. This such a fitting moment for the international children’s medical charity organization whose founder traces the institution’s roots in the Philippines. In 1982, plastic surgeon Dr. William P. Magee Jr. with his wife, registered nurse Kathleen S. Magee, visited the Philippines as part of a delegation of medical volunteers coming to repair children’s cleft lips and cleft palates. They encountered hundreds of children with deformities. As they headed back to Norfolk, Virginia in the USA, the Magees swore to be back as they see the enormous need. Operation Smile was born and they started soliciting donations of surgical equipment and supplies from manufacturers and conducted fund raising. The rest, as they say, is history, as Operation Smile is ...

Get up! You may think I’m asking you to stand up or arise from where you are now. But if we’re on the 80s, you’ll probably assume I’m referring to one’s attire, especially when asked “What’s your get up?”. This phrase takes on another meaning at the GET UP Blogger Launch by Golden ABC, held at the Museum Cafe in Greenbelt 4, Makati last August 25th. In summary, the event encourages us to get up to get up to help others get up. That’s a mouthful. Let me explain.
