Local mobile phone manufacturer Cherry Mobile launched their newest gadget offerings on the proverbial day of November 11, 2011 which started at 11AM at a restaurant in Quezon City. It was a gathering of techie bloggers, with no less than Abe Olandres of Yugatech gracing the event. I was entering the function room and was surprised to see him filling out the registration at the counter. I was surprised not because Abe was there, but because I was invited to an event where he was also a guest. “I arrived” was my afterthought. HAHA! I was elated, but that feeling was quickly taken away as I focused my attention to the business at hand — Cherry Mobile’s invasion. It was an invasion of droids!
A total of 4 mobile phones and 3 tablets were showcased that day, each offering the same WiFi-capability and connectivity that can only be achieved by high-tech gadgets. I am an Android fan and had the chance to use an HTC Magic until it died on me this year. I have been dreaming of getting a new smartphone and as I shared on my previous post, I already have a shortlist. But lo and behold! Cherry Mobile gadgets are here!! Not one, but seven of them. Woot!
As I chat with fellow bloggers, sexy and beautiful Cherry Mobile reps approached us to discuss Candy Chat. It looked like a miniature version of BlackBerryBold 9900 because it’s so small and sits perfectly on my hand. It’s similarity in features are the QWERTY keypad and Touch Screen, sporting the dual SIM technology. For only P3,699 the Candy Chat is a perfect entry-level phone. If you prefer full Touch Screen functionality instead, there’s Candy which is also a dual SIM phone with 2.8″ Resistive screen. Both are equipped with Android Froyo 2.2 OS, WiFi, FM Radio, 3.5mm Headset jack and a 1.3MP camera. The storage capacity is expandable too for up to 16GB MicroSD. If in a budget but itching to experience a smartphone, this is definitely a must-buy.
For those looking for more power, the Cherry Mobile Stellar could be the “IT” phone.
It features the latest Android OS version — the Gingerbread 2.3 — with a 3.5″ HVGA Capacitive Touch Screen powered by a Qualcomm 800 Mhz Processor. It has GPS, a 5MP camera, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity options and is has expandable MicroSD storage of up to 32GB. One interesting feature that I like about the Stellar is that it can be turned into a portable WiFi hotspot, enabling one to connect other WiFi-enabled devices and surf away. This Android-powered device is similar with the Lenovo A60 in almost all features including the price range. The notable difference is that the Stellar is capable of handling 3 SIM Cards.
A few of the leading mobile phone manufacturers has already introduced mobile phones with dual-core processing power. The catch is the higher price tag. Cherry Mobile introduces Magnum 2X — a 3.8″ WVGA Capacitive Touch Screen phone with nVidia Cortex A9 Dual Core 1 GHz Processor. The phone looks very solid from the outside and gives you that extra oomph in the looks department. It also has dual camera — with 5MP (back) and VGA (front) resolution. Again, I like the fact that it can be used as a portable WiFi hotspot. At P15,899, the Magnum 2X is definitely the cheapest dual-core Android phone in the market.
What made me really drool were the tablets — the Cherry Pad, Cherry Pad Turbo and Supreme. The first two are considered entry-level tablets, with the Cherry Pad running on an 800 MHz processor on an Android 2.2 Froyo platform while the Turbo is equipped with a 1.2GHz processor running Android’s Gingerbread. Both gadgets have a 7″ Full Touch Sceen, WiFi connectivity, 4GB internal storage and can read a microSD of up 32GB capacity. I love the fact that these tablets are sold below the P10,000 mark, way below actually. You might be disappointed with the camera though. The lower version only has a VGA camera, while the higher priced tablet has two — 2MP at the back and VGA in front. These gadgets are still worth considering especially if you already have a camera with higher resolution.
The 3rd tablet introduced is the Cherry Mobile Supreme. It’s bigger at 10.1″ screen size and runs on an nVidia Tegra2 Dual Core 1GHz processor. It also has 8GB internal storage capacity and 1GB Ram. Unlike the two entry-level tablets, the Supreme is equipped with 3G Data Connection. With such a powerful tablet for only almost half the price of other tablets, I won’t be surprised if hard-core techies decide to buy this one. Compared to what’s offered by other competitors, the Cherry Mobile Supreme is a practical choice. We were told that this will be available at the latter part of November and will come equipped with Android Gingerbread.
With the latest line up of smartphones and tablets, Cherry Mobile launched an invasion of two kinds — an Android invasion and a Cherry invasion! These lower-priced gadgets will surely be a hit among techie Pinoys looking to hook with mobile phones using better technology. It’s such a sweet deal, like a cherry on top of your ice cream. What’s even sweeter is the availability of all Cherry Mobile handsets at special discounted prices at the Cherry for Christmas sale. Isn’t that sweet? It’s Cherry sweet!
