Complicated by Lopez Museum Shows a Conflicted Pinoy Life

Complicated Presented by Lopez Museum

The latest exhibit entitled Complicated by Lopez Museum showcases how conflicted our lives are as Filipinos, though we many not have that awareness of it. At least this is what was impressed upon me after the exclusive preview of the exhibit. This is not my first time to visit the Lopez Museum, but this is the first time that I felt the artists were effective in reaching out and communicating their message. The imagery were strong that it was imprinted on my periphery even today, 8 days after seeing what Lopez Museum has to offer. Featuring the works of Mike Adrao, Ea Torrado and Leslie de Chavez along with the art of Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, among others, Complicated presented by the Lopez Museum tackles the knotted relationship of the Philippines with the countries that colonized us in the past. Indeed we are no longer under any country’s rule ...

Boy Abunda Calls on Everyone to Make Your Nanay Proud

Boy Abunda talks about Make Your Nanay Proud

The King of Talk, Boy Abunda encourages everyone to do deeds that will make your mothers (and fathers, for that matter) proud as he introduced Make Your Nanay Proud Foundation. Held last February 13th at the Astoria Plaza in Pasig City, it was my first time to meet the popular talk show host and learn about the organization he founded. I am very well aware how the eloquent showbiz personality, fondly called as Tito Boy, love his mother very much. It is something that everyone in the country is aware of. But the information he shared to the press that day as far as putting up MYNP goes beyond his love for his “Nanay.” Beginning with the End in Mind This is a phrase that self-help guru Stephen Covey has popularized and it seemed that it stuck into Boy Abunda’s mindset. Asked why he opted to establish Make Your Nanay ...

Michael Martinez – A Hero’s Welcome and other Activities

Michael Martinez awarded check

Shortly after arriving from Sochi Russia, Winter Olympian Michael Martinez received A Hero’s Welcome last night at the SM Mall of Asia. At the event, the figure skater was awarded lifetime privileges at all SM Skating Rink facilities. He was also awarded a check for $10,000. Everyone at the event, including the public who were lucky to be at MOA while the proceedings took place were in full support of Martinez. From where I’m seated, I can feel how overwhelmed Michael Martinez is with all the support he has received, especially when some of the mall goers shouts his name. Indeed, it’s instant fame but the humble 17-year old boy pointed out in his speech that what he has done is no different from the other Filipino Olympians who did their best in the previous Olympic games. Indeed, the other athletes also deserve such a welcome. Here’s a short video ...

Spotlight on Michael Christian Martinez

Michael Christian Martinez at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany

It seems that the spotlight is on Michael Christian Martinez these days as I see my Facebook News Feed filled with snippets of stories about him. Rightly so, as he is the Philippines’ one and only representative to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. In fact, I listed him as one good reason to watch the Olympics on my other blogpost. He is set to compete on February 13 against 29 other figure skaters to be part of the finals happening the next day, February 14. Does he have what it takes? To reach the finals, Michael Christian Martinez needs to be a part of the top 24 competitors in his category. He was interviewed in October 2013 by Jannelle So in Kababayan Today, a daily show that talks about Filipino American issues, personalities and news that caters to the interest of the Los Angeles Filipino community. During the interview, the 17-year old ...
