The Comedy Queen Ai-Ai Delas Alas is Best Female Actor at the 7th Queens World Film Festival. This is for her performance in the indie film “Area” where she bested Karin Hanczewski, Dorothea Hagena and Amy Redford, daughter of actor Robert Redford. The recognition is for her portrayal as an aging prostitute in the film.
The awarding happened on March 19, 2017 in Astor, Queens in New York. Ai-Ai is now part of the few Filipino actors recognized for their performances internationally. There’s no doubt that she is more than just a comedy actress.
Ai-Ai Delas Alas has proven herself as an actress, not just a comedienne. She has received acting recognition from the various award-giving body in the Philippines. As a matter of fact, all she has yet to receive is an Urian Awards. And that’s one recognition that she still aspires despite the international recognition from Queens World Film Festival.
Yes, despite the fact that Ai-Ai Delas Alas is Best Female Actor in New York, she still want to be recognized in the Philippines. That goes to show that the actress is not consumed by the awards and stardom. She is still the same Martina Eileen family and close friends knew, the same Martina Eileen who just wants to be happy and be surrounded with people she loves.
“Area” is about a place in Angeles, Pampanga where prostitutes nestle like hungry birds. The jurors of the Queens World Film Festival were spellbound by her portrayal in the movie. Her character showed the real truth of the state of prostitution in the country and even in other parts parts of the world. Ai Ai says that she was not optimistic to get an international award because there were 156 great international movies in the competition. But she did.
As the old saying goes, “when it rains, it pours.” Everything is rosy in the home front for Ai-Ai’s love life and career. She stars in the forthcoming Regal Films Mighty Yaya and will be working in a movie under Star Cinema soon. She is a mainstay in GMA 7’s Hay Bahay and Sunday Pinasaya.
Ai Ai has come a long way in Philippine entertainment. She has become a household name. People laugh when she laughs. They cry when she cries. The Comedy Queen is more than making the people laugh. She can playful, but she can be serious too. She can switch roles with ease – from serious to funny, tragic to happy. An actor indeed.
The movie “Area” will soon be shown in Philippine cinema. And if Ai-Ai delas Alas is Best Female Actor at Queens World Film Festival, it’s likely that she’ll receive awards from local award giving body.
